Artist Statement
In my work I am inviting viewers to witness the world as I see it. It is explorative and I am never quite sure of the outcome.
Art
fulfils my need to create and to communicate, to others, without words. I describe and narrate my images exploring a
variety of materials, which develop and evolve over time.
I began creating art by drawing and painting and moved onto other materials as my need to experiment grew. At the end of the process, I look for the pieces that might speak clearly to the viewer, in the sense that they provoke thought. There is often a puzzling uncertainty in the image which I enjoy as a potential focus for contemplation.
I admire such artists as Tracey Emin, Bobby Baker and Josephine King who have channelled their trauma through their art with an authentic and humane approach to image making.
Outsider artists also interest me greatly in as much as they create art as a way of being or existing.
Art can provoke a variety of responses in
different people based on their own diverse view of and experiences of the
world. It excites me that what
constitutes art is ever evolving as our knowledge and understanding of the
world changes.
